Our letter to the President

I agree that we need more public housing, and that you need to do more to stop foreclosures.

Jenyl McGuire and Janette & Sophia, San Jose

I am in desperate need of housing. Right now I am having to line up with my daughter who is barely making it! Please help!

Hey Mr. President,

This is the first time in 20 years that I have asked for any general assistance. It did help me get back on my feet. Please continue providing assistance. Thank you.

Milaneta Manzhos, San Jose

I want to say "thanks" to our president. We love him, and we have good impressions of him. My English is very limited, my family has come from Ukraine. I should like to write much more of my thoughts but my English is not good enough. Thank you dear president.

Patricia Bejarano, San Jose

Our homeless situation is very bad here in San Jose, and we could benefit from these things that are requested.

Roberto Brrazola, San Jose

Gracias.

Arleen Hines, San Jose

Dear President Obama,

I am so proud to have lived in this time/era. I am Afro-American and to see you become President of the WORLD, how great is that. I am poor and I work hard. I live paycheck to paycheck and I am not sure what I'm going to do. I don't know, but I love you, Michelle, and the two children.

Terry L. Gaines, San Jose

Thank God for you. You are our savior. Please help us.

Mr. Obama,

Gracias.

Teresa Nunez, San Jose

Dear Mr. President,

We really need more section 8 vouchers here in Silicon Valley, California, and in all the states to speed up assistance for needy families. Please help the young school-age children so that they can live in ADEQUATE housing through their school years.

Pierre M. Johnson, Jr., Los Angeles, CA

I am living with my parents. In 2007 I was evicted and I need a place to stay.

Joey Turrubiate, San Jose

Thank you, Mr. Obama, for trying to help. I do have a housing voucher, but I know many homeless need more. Thanks.

Jose Arturo Mondragon, San Jose

Senor Presidente Obama,

Gracias.

Rita E. DeOlveria, San Jose

As an American female I feel that homelessness is a crisis, and I am one that is homeless because of the crisis. I am not able to work. Funds are needed for people who are trying and need help. Just help.

Orlando De Freitas, Santa Clara, CA

Richard Maestre, San Jose

We need more section 8 housing.

Angela Smith & Michael Grijalva, San Jose

We are parents of a six year-old son. We are so trying to get section 8, but I have to wait for the list to open. Please help that. We love who you are and the fact that you are our president. Please be what you are about and do it.

Jose C. Mengano, San Jose

Please help our people!

Sandra Lynn Ferraro, San Jose

Dear President,

I filed for a $750.00 tax refund and they stole my mail. The Refund Department won't send me the refund. I am homeless. I need housing.

Frances Morovat, San Jose

Mr. President,

More section 8 vouchers immediately, because most income or funding takes a person too long to be able to afford housing. And hopefully, more university housing for graduate students when they study on campus or at school. Thank you. I am a graduate student.

Thomas A. Riley, San Jose

I need help. I pay child support and can't afford rent, too high. I need help with housing. I am a single father. I lost my son. He had a heart transplant when he was ten years old and died when he was twelve.

Fred Hirsch, Santa Cruz, CA

Christy Wong-Perez, San Jose

Please help the homeless families, for the children, so they can have their own bed. That's my dream! We the people like that you care about us. God bless you for the big heart you have for our poor people.

Barabara Lea, Los Gatos, CA

Joy Miller, Sunnyvale, CA

1) Need HUD-subsidized apartment!

2) Keep jobs in the U.S.A.

3) Rent control on mobile homes. People with no job get 3% annual increase and soon become homeless.

4) Nationalize medicine. Control medicine prices. Universal single payer health insurance.

5) Build more senior housing with access to outpatient facilities and drug stores.

6) Put import tax on goods manufactured overseas by U.S. companies. Hire citizens to work until unemployment goes down.

7) More part-time jobs for seniors and others that need them.

Jeronimo Garcia, San Jose

Mr. Obama,

Isidro M. Verdugo, San Jose

Dearest President,

There is a big need for housing for homeless people, section 8 vouchers, school and college for immigrant kids, and more construction for low-income families. And stop all foreclosures. Thank you.

Shasta Heady, San Jose

Please put money to housing assistance and into building affordable houses. I am a college student and live at home with my sigle mom and three siblings. Things are pretty tight, and I am sure it is that way for many Americans, especially the people who were already poor before the economy's present situation. Please consider this. YES WE CAN!

Maria Jimenes, San Jose

Virlyn A. Johnson, San Jose

I am renting an apartment for $1600. We moved in November, 2008, but I lost a job, so I am asking assistance to pay rent. I am separated from my husband and am raising four kids.

I deeply appreciate your help, and thank you.

Maria Hernandez, San Jose

Rannier Barrientos, San Jose

Shirly Souza, San Jose

Good job, keep up the good work. We really need these services we are asking for.

Agnes Jawara, San Jose

Some of us are not as fortunate to have money for a big house or even an apartment. I know so many of my friends and family are on the streets. My boyfriend has been homeless for five years, and in those five years he turned to drinking. Now that I met him, I am helping him out because my family is sort of wealthy. But please take these problemns into consideration.

Familia Orozco, San Jose

I want a house.

Olivia Collazo, San Jose

More affordable low-income houses.

Jobs, especially for single women with children.

Financial assistance for homeless people, especially those with children, to help them in life. Children are our future.

Help mothers financially and offer classes on how to start to get ahead in life.

AND YES WE CAN, MR. PRESIDENT.

Monica Corrales, San Jose

We are asking for more section 8 housing for wonderful mothers and families that truly need it, families that love their children so much and will do anything for them. There is such struggle and pain, and basically everyday sadness. I feel for these ladies and families because they need change.

Also help the families with foreclosures that don't know what to do and where to go, families that need that extra push to lead the way. Please help. I think we all want change and to live good lives. Thank you.

Eva C. Beisne, San Jose

Dear Mr. Obama,

I don't want my sister to lose her home. They work hard!

Avery Johnson & Lavern Wright, San Jose

Please help more with the homeless and get more services for veterans, and thanks for your good work.

Candida Urbina, San Jose

Yovana Torres, San Jose

Richard Tucker, San Jose

I have been homeless from 1985 to 2009.

Petra Maldonado Rodriguez, San Jose

Senor Obama,

Richard Herrera, San Jose

Mr. Obama, I would really appreciate if you would consider the request for everything stated above. I personally thank you.

Betsy Wolf-Graves, San Jose

More section 8 vouchers immediately.

I know women who have been waiting months for vouchers. One just received hers. She now has hope.

Build public housing to meet the need.

To meet the need, we must have a complete inventory of spaces in our community that are available but are currently not being used. That will let us know how many units need to be built and where.

Full funding of the National Housing Trust Fund.

Stop foreclosures.

Re-regulating financial institutions will be a first step in helping people stay in their homes.

Maria Gomez, San Jose

We would like to get more assistance on housing, rent, and public places to help others like myself, yourself, and others. Today it is us, tomorrow it might be you. Thanks.

Roslyn Dean, San Jose

Rickie Rivers, San Jose

It is very important to consider this request. I am in a clean and sober environment, and without this type of public help I would be homeless. There are so many people depending on your assistance. Thank you.

P.S. Call me if time allows you. I worked with the Federal government for fifteen years at the V.A. in Palo Alto, California.

Pete Fullerton, San Jose

The appalling nature of our housing situation in this beautiful country is enough to cause the strongest man (woman) to cry.

My ministry is with those who have fallen through the cracks in our Declaration of Independence. The right to the pursuit of Happiness is lost when Life is disrupted through the lack of understanding how to survive. I am personal witness to those whose Liberties of choice have been completely taken from them. As a result of these injustices we injure the basic call to our freedom for the few.

Please, Mr. President, do not allow this to continue on your watch.

May the peace of our Lord and savior be with you.

Senor Presidente Obama:

Cheyenne Bear, San Jose

I would like to say thank you. Please help support us. We need your help. Thank you. I am homeless staying at Little Orchard Shelter. God bless. I hope to see you visit there.

Angie Sotello, San Jose

Hi Obama,

Help the high school kids, help those who are sick and need medicine, help with housing, help the homeless. Thank you!

Abbie Elizabeth Warren, San Jose

This is particularly critical in San Jose (Silicon Valley), California, where the cost of living is unusually high and there are more and more people being displaced onto the streets, and few, or no, jobs to be had.

Rosie Herrera, San Jose

We need more section 8 housing and lower rent housing. People pay too much rent. There has to be a rent reduction.

Jaime Valenzuela, San Jose

Steve Chehy, San Jose

I am currently homeless, and have been for 15 years, but I have just received my housing voucher. I lost my house in 1992. I had what I learned recently is called a "foreclosure loan" with Home Savings & Loan of San Diego. I had my house for five years until the balloon payment came due and I did not have the resources to refinance. The bank was no help at all and made me feel worthless and wrong that I could not meet my financial obligations. It was one of the most painful experiences of my life, next to the deaths of my parents who passed away six months apart from each other.

Norma Cano, San Jose

Soy Norma. Gracias.

Steven M. Regalado, San Jose

We need to help our homeless here in our own country first. We need more public housing and vouchers in order for us to survive. We will lose jobs and families if we don't do something for us at home rather than abroad.

Rena Regalado, San Jose

I was homeless but now have housing. I would still be homeless if not for help from housing. We could not make it.

Tiffany Regalado, San Jose

Andrea Fuentes, San Jose

We all need more jobs so we can work for you.

Maria Marones, San Jose

Susie K. Kim, San Jose

Help the poor people.

Robert & Socorro McCord, San Jose

Our children are among those being negatively affected by the downturn in property values. Our daughter and her family bought their home in 2005 and one of our sons and his wife bought their home in 2007. Since the cost of housing in this area has dropped so dramatically our kid’s homes are now down to about 50% of their purchase price. Foreclosures abound in the neighborhoods around them. And yet - they get to continue to pay property taxes on the much higher purchase price.

Our daughter is especially affected because they have an interest only payment and the interest on their loan is being increased which raises the amount of the mortgage and will soon make the payment so high that it is impossible for them to make the mortgage payments.

As retirees we have limited income and are unable to help the kids as we would like. It is hurtful to know that the people at the top who are responsible for getting us into this financial predicament are being allowed to keep their ill-gotten monies and goods while the everyday hard working people of this country are losing the shirts off of their backs. That borders on sinfulness.

Ella Jones, San Jose

I am homelss, need housing, income. Thanks.

Raul Boss, San Jose

Jobs.

Jose Reyes, San Jose

Don't forget us. I am Mexican. I wait for your help. You promised us.

Luke Miranda, San Jose

The homeless are my brothers and sisters. "Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters you do it unto me." - J.C. I am a stroke patient, now homeless.

Albertana del Angel, San Jose

Esther Caballero, San Jose

Mr Obama,

Guadalupe Lopez, San Jose

Maria Luisa Lopez, San Jose

Necesitamos que bajen las rentas.

Thomas Wagner, San Jose

I am homeless, as are many other mentally and physically abled men and women. In a country so blessed by God, greed should not rule the land.

I believe more and more U.S. citizens who do work and pay their taxes will soon find themselves in similar positions.

Please use the power and authority given you by God to address these discrepancies in our system.

Gaby Campos, San Jose

Senor Presidente,

Reeberde Hardy, San Jose

Cindy Jordan & DeAndre, Sunnyvale, CA

I once was homeless and pregnant, with three children and nowhere to live. I only hope and pray no other person will have to live like that. We had nowhere to shower or cook or eat. We stood in line, my children so hungry but too frightened to eat. I hope to God we could get more section 8 vouchers for the homeless in San Jose, the families and children who are lost on the streets. They are human and have the right to housing.

The Bay Area (Silicon Valley, and surrounding Counties) need to be recognized for the need of an adjustment of a higher loan value in regards to Freddie Mac Guidelines.

The vast majority of home values are too large and don’t qualify under the current limits. There is a need for an exception to this limit, implementation of some allowable adjustments or just raising the limit overall.

If something is not done immediately, with the help and persistence of the Obama Administration regarding this issue, homeowners will continue to default and foreclosures will mount. The area is the “HUB” of the world for all tech innovation and a leader in “Green Technology.” To allow further deterioration of this real estate market in this Bay area, would be a travesty that would resonate for many years to come. The “Domino” affect, would have a long lasting toll on the future of Tech and Green progress and such affect would reach to the rest of the world, causing disruption and unnecessary delay in progress and stability of many things that are in current dismay.

I urge the Obama Administration to act quickly, to try to find a resolve to accommodate the higher valued homes in these areas, and as well as other areas of the U.S. that have the same needs.

It is just as hard to be able to purchase a home in these areas here, as it is anywhere else in the U.S. (perhaps, even harder here) and the same help and consideration should be given to all homeowners on an even level by Freddie Mac (and Fannie May).

There should be no distinction or discrimination for any homeowner trying to save their home, especially based on values that are not in their control, but rather dictated by market area. STOP FORECLOSURES!

FULLY FUND THE NATION HOUSING TRUST FUND

ALLOW FOR MORE SECTION 8 VOUCHERS: (SANTA CLARA COUNTY IS JUST ONE OF A FEW IN THE U.S. THAT HAS “MTW” PROGRAM WITH HOUSING AUTHORITY)

BUILDING PUBLIC HOUSING IS A NEED THAT WILL ONLY CONTINUE TO GROW AND THE NEED WILL AND “IS” WORSENING DAILY.

DELAYING THIS MORE WILL ONLY CREATE A GREATER HARDSHIP ON ALL FELLOW AMERICANS.

Ruby Martinez & Nisiah, San Jose

My son and I are homeless. I would love to see more jobs or housing that women with children on welfare would be able to afford. Thank you for taking the time to read our letter.

Tim Fitzgerald, San Jose

There is nothing more painful in life than to be forced to live in the streets without a place to rest.

As Christ himself said, "The son of man has no place to lay his head." Where are the homeless to turn if not for help from the nation's leaders? In Silicon Valley there has been an unmet housing shortage for forty years. Clearly local authorities would rather profit at the expense of those who are at a disadvantage, rather than meet their public responsibilities and resolve this inequality. Please help.

Anibal Arturo Velarde, San Jose

Mr President,

I have been helping families in need for almost eight years. I really want you to work out some kind of help to alleviate this sad situation affecting thousands of children and individuals. Thank you, God bless you.

Laura Sacil, San Jose

I have been on the housing section 8 waiting list for a long time. I hope I get my housing soon. I am disabled, and a single mother of a sixteen year-old daughter. I would like to get housing soon.
