Our letter to the President

Dear President Obama,

Please take action to end America’s affordable housing and homelessness crisis. We need:
  • More section 8 vouchers immediately
  • Build public housing to meet the need
  • Full funding of the National Housing Trust Fund
  • Stop foreclosures

In Santa Clara County there are over 7000 people homeless, including almost 900 kids. Many of these people have been on the streets for 25 years or more, and many have major health issues. Many cannot access meals on a regular basis. I myself was homeless for roughly 8 1/2 years, but was fortunate enough to begin working with a local church that consistently helps the homeless as much as possible.

However, as rich as America is, we need to do more to help our less fortunate brothers, sisters, and children. If we can spend billions on wars in places like Iraq, why can't we help people that need it? Why can't we stop foreclosures? Purchasing a home is out of reach for many. How many more people will be put out into the streets, and how many will die on those streets, before we say "enough is enough"?

I am willing to continue to do what I can to end the housing crisis. But we need to do more, including building more housing, and ensuring that EVERYONE has an adequate income, meals, and health care.

Please do NOT let this important area be pushed aside. Thank you!

Yolanda Engiles, CHAM
