Our letter to the President

Dear President Obama,

Please take action to end America’s affordable housing and homelessness crisis. We need:
  • More section 8 vouchers immediately
  • Build public housing to meet the need
  • Full funding of the National Housing Trust Fund
  • Stop foreclosures

Dear Mr. President,

Once upon a time, there was a dedicated Afro-American man whose rank was that of a parachute rigger chief in the U.S. Navy. This man, my father, had a wife and a total of seven dependent children to rear.

Our home life was very important to my parents, and we were raised with a great deal of discipline and strong Christianity. We were the typical military family, moving from one duty station to the next. Life was a challenge, and we adopted to our new environments with considerable ease.

"Like mother, like daughter," I married a USN serviceman and had two children. Our marriage did not succeed and I became a single parent. Together, our lives changed to another level, and this is where affordable housing came into play.

"Back in the day" affordable housing was not plentiful. I had to relocate out of the immediate area in order to obtain affordable housing.

Although my children are grown now, my story does not end. The housing problem still exists. Low-income housing is still a major problem.

"Is change going to come?" Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
